The day you drove away

This poem gives voice to an old, faithful car left behind for a newer model. Through its memories and heartbreak, it explores loyalty, loss, and the quiet grief of being replaced—turning an everyday moment into a story of devotion and departure. I wrote it in the back of the new car as we drove away from the old one, imagining the world through the eyes of the companion we left behind.

I carried you proud through the roar and the rain,
Through winding roads and days of strain.
Eighty-five thousand miles—again and again—
I gave you all I had to give.

I held your secrets in my worn-out seats,
Your hurried lunches, your half-lost receipts.
I warmed your hands in winter’s sleet—
I helped you breathe, I helped you live.

🎶 Our Joyful Miles

We sang loud songs with windows down,
We laughed at storms that shook the town.
You tapped the wheel, I wore your crown—
Your chariot, your trusted friend.

We joked at lights, we danced in queues,
We chased the sunset’s fading hues.
Those silly moments, soft and true—
I thought they’d never, ever end.

But then you came in a gleaming twin,
A younger me with flawless skin.
You stripped my life from deep within—
Each touch a blade that cut me raw.

My glovebox emptied, my memories tossed,
You took your world and left me lost.
You didn’t pause to count the cost
Of breaking what you once adored.

My final wound—too sharp to mend,
A fatal break, a brutal end.
You turned away, chose the younger friend—
And left me shattered on the floor.

Was I not fierce? Was I not brave?
I carried you through every wave.
I kept you safe, I tried to save
Each moment you were crying for.

You drove away in the younger frame,
Leaving me drowning in my shame.
I called your cherished, precious name—
But you were gone, and didn’t turn.

I gave you all I had to give,
I helped you breathe, I helped you live.
And this is how you choose to forgive—
By leaving me with wheels that burn.

So let me haunt the roads we crossed,
Let every mile remind your loss.
For love like mine was never gloss—
It broke, it bled, it fiercely burned.

And though you left me where I lay,
Though silence steals my voice away,
I curse the moment you betrayed—
And bless the joy we once had earned.
